Chain is an extension of the On the Tiles series. It draws from the visual structure of traditional roof tiles to further explore the emotional and cultural intersections across generations. The inspiration came from my research on ancient architecture in Shanxi and Anhui, where tiles, dougong brackets, and eave motifs are not only architectural components but also spiritual vessels—carrying the thoughts, hopes, and concerns of ancestors.
Lacquer, as a form of Chinese intangible cultural heritage, is both a means of transmission and a symbol of flow. I extracted structural motifs and used lacquer techniques to form and print them onto fabric.
The textile floats gently in the air. Metal wire and silk thread intertwine, forming a suspended structure held in subtle tension. It is both fragile and firm—like those invisible emotional bonds that quietly link us to the lived experiences of those before us. It is a silent love—never loudly declared, yet deeply rooted.
And this heavy, inherited love—what does it truly mean across generations?
No judgment is made. The work leaves the question open, for the viewer to answer through lingering gaze and silent reflection.
